Reading – My First Love

Books have always had the power to make one creative, expand their horizon and give one the power of imagination. It is often said that one should read for at least 30 minutes a day. It helps to relax the mind and get away from the daily dreary routine. Reading also has the power of being a knowledge bank, continuously unfolding information to its recipients.

I have always loved reading. Be it fiction or non-fiction, it has always been my first go-to routine. I had started with fiction based novels in my childhood. The top five are as follows:

  1. Famous Five series
  2. Secret Seven series
  3. Goosebumps series
  4. Nancy Drew series
  5. Harry Potter series

Then as we moved on to a senior grade, our English teacher introduced us to some classics and Shakespeare novels:

  1. Jane Eyre
  2. David Copperfield
  3. Merchant of Venice
  4. King Lear
  5. Julius Caeser – My all time favorite

I don’t think there can ever be a play as well written as Julius Ceaser. The character traits of Caeser- ambitious, courageous with blind trust on his best friend, Brutus who was dealing with a constant inner fight of friendship versus country love and Cassius – the cunning and devious manipulator. The whole play is a masterpiece and leaves one spellbound.

Post the play “Et tu, Brute” has been recognized as the phrase for the worst form of treachery from one’s closest friend.

As I got older, I tried my hand at reading biographies, business books and philosophical series. My top five favorite are:

  1. Wings of Fire  – A.P.J Abdul Kalam
  2. Google Story
  3. Books by Khaled Hosseini  – The Kite Runner, And the Mountains Echoed,A Thousand Splendid Suns
  4. Books by Paulo Coelho – The Alchemist, Veronica decides to die
  5. Books by Robin Sharma – The Monk who sold his Ferrari,Who will cry when you die

These books had the power to inspire as well as show the dark side of life and one’s victory over it. They teach us the way of life and how one can lead it in a more beautiful way. It is a treat to read them.

I have now moved on to reading autobiographies of various famous personalities like Princess Diana, Sachin Tendulkar, Elon Musk and so on. Learning new facts everyday, and enjoying every moment of it.

So all book lovers, keep reading and enjoying. Please also comment your top five books as well.Would love to hear your thoughts.
